As a beginner, i had to get the pluck-up to test Drop to kibana and share my no limit experience!

As a good kick-off to start using Kibana, i view the online videos to understand how i can make it work.

First, i connect to my account

Still following the videos instructions, i upload my file (, les sites de prélèvements du Covid-19) in my secured online file storage space. Then i launch drop to kibana feature. At this step, i fill in the index name and delimiter.

Nevertheless, i do not quite understand what sounds like a “delimiter” in this worldj. Then i read an article in the learn center to know it . Now that i got it, can choose the right delimiter. In my case, i just have to choose “comma”.

Then i validate and wait….
Nothing happens. No pop-up or new tab on my screen.
This is why i launch once again the feature following the same instructions
And i’m still waiting….

Eventually, i realize that i launched twice my file. How do i know that? I simply have a message in my mailbox (i didn’t see it at first). I have an e-mail telling my my file is well processed and is now available in kibana.

To make it clear, you have to know that it can be a while since the time when you push the create button and when it is well processed in (mainly depending on the size of your file).

Then i go to next step and follow tutos to create my index and start playing with data.

I try each visualization to see what it looks like. Some of them are quite complicated to handle to me like this one :

Region map

Heat map, or this other one Gauge :

I think most of my misunderstandings come from data types i don’t really know which to choose to have the right viz (average, count, max etc…) as when “select an aggregation” is an option 🤔

Other viz are quite easy to understand and use. Let me show you what i can reach out :

Horizontal bar

Coordinate Map

I’m now on track and i can go on data discovery building my first my first Dashboard.

My first full dashboard with drop to kiban feature

What i like most: i can order and choose graphs the way i like. It is simple to drag and drop graphs and adjsut their size and location. Filters are also very usefull whan youré searching a specific data type as day, place, time or detail on “sites de prélèvements” in France.

What i don’t like: whats’ “NULL” that come on my screen on graphs like Pie or Horizontal Bar for instance? NULL means no data or emply data. I asked muself if it is possible to replace Null by another value like “no data” or something like that

Going on with data ans dashboard, another question is :
Can we display address in a « coordinate map » when mouse over a location?
In my space, it would be useful to get a place where i can handle it to go to the nearest “site de prélèvement”.

By now i still don’t have all the answers to my questions but i’ll be right back to let you know what will be next steps

I hope this feedback on my experience wiht ‘Drop to Kibana‘ can help you understand better what you can reach out with Kibana

If you want to achieve great visualizations and dashboard, please don’t mind surfing on Tutos videos and learn center and their great instructions will help you to get started.
